What is the best thing about working with alternative couples?

I just love them being themselves and not being sorry for it. I want everyone to feel confident

and just be enjoying their day. So when meeting couples who break traditions, and do what feels

right to them, it is the best feeling ever!

What is one thing you recommend to anyone wanting to go for a more alternative

approach to their wedding design?

Brainstorm and be yourself. I would recommend noting down everything that makes

you, YOU! That as individuals and as a couple. It will really help you find out what style

suits you both the best. If there is anything you don’t like/don’t feel comfortable with when it

comes to wedding planning... then don’t do it.

Also, it’s okay to say no. Don’t feel scared to tell relatives / friends that it isn’t your bag. At

the end of the day, the wedding should reflect you as a couple and no one else.

What has been your favourite past wedding and why?

Each couple I have worked with has been amazing. I honestly can’t pick a favourite. But

what I would say is a wedding I did at The globe in Hay for Georgie and Marley was an

amazing experience. I think the main thing I loved about this couple was their confidence in

knowing what they wanted and didn’t want at their wedding day. To see them go from green

to whites to full on rock n roll vibes was so fab to see. It was them and the day reflected that

to a T.

What new trends are you seeing for 2023 and 2024?

I think we can all agree that disco balls will always be a fav feature in wedding styling. I also

believe trends are great to get inspiration from but don’t feel like you have to have them.

Probably not the answer people want of a stylist but trends come and go…you as a couple

will always be yourselves and that’s the most important trend I would suggest.

Which is your favourite alternative colour scheme and why?

Bright pink and red. I love how you can be romantic or edgy with those colours depending on

the tones you use. I also love a touch of black to add those moody vibes to the day

What is one top styling tip you have that every alternative couple should do?

You might of guess it already but…being yourself!! Look at what is around you in your home.

What you like to wear and where you like to go. Elements of those areas really help you find

your style. They are what makes you.

Rock N Roll Baker

Next we had a chat with Sonia at the amazing Rock N Roll Baker about her OFF-THE-CHART cakes.

The perfect way to add some serious WOW factor, a stunning bespoke cake really amps up the volume of your wedding. The most amazing centrepiece imaginable, and don’t forget you can combine the work of your suppliers here and have some florals and decor for the cake table too, or use a stylist to dress the cake table. Your cake table can serve as an amazing photography backdrop too.

What's the best thing about working with alternative couples?

I call myself an artist, not a baker and having an alternative couple to work with, usually gives me the opportunity to try new ideas. They tend to throw the rule book out the window and say - "Go for it!". With a few inspiration ideas such as colour, texture etc I'm then usually given complete creative freedom which then allows me to create my best work.

What is one thing you recommend to anyone wanting to go for a more alternative approach to their wedding design?

I have 2 things, sorry! Don't listen to anyone else, it's YOUR day. Take inspiration from ANYTHING! This can be a falling down old stone wall for texture, the colours of the morning pink sky, modern architecture etc.

What has been your favourite past order/ wedding and why?

I have a few favourites, and the one thing they all have in common was how relaxed and trusting my couples were. With having free reign, I got to create some amazing cakes which wowed on the day.

What new trends are you seeing for 2023 and 2024?

I am seeing lots of flower-less cakes! Adding flowers is one of my favourite parts, however I am loving seeing lots of structural cakes and lots of use from wafer/rice paper. I am also seeing much more texture. This can be created in so many ways and can add such lovely depth and detail to the cake which looks different from every angle.

What's the best thing about working with alternative couples?

Being able to make non traditional wedding dresses! I absolutely love the couture collections by Dior and Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda which are very dramatic with historical influences, right up my street! So if someone is willing to let me go for it design wise you will see some drama.

What is one thing you recommend to anyone wanting to go for a more alternative approach to their wedding design?

Whatever you like just go for it. It’s your day. Don’t let anyone interfere or dictate or run down your choices. If you think someone might not approve of your alternative dress or styling don’t involve them in the process. Keep your team small and have a big reveal on the day to everyone else.

What has been your favourite past wedding and why?

I loved making my tattoo artists wedding dress last year. Her wedding was in Spain so it had a slight Spanish feel to it but very modern and cool. My absolute favourite has just recently been finished, the wedding is in a few weeks and it is absolutely stunning and very dramatic. Its not white or ivory. It has traditional elements executed in a non traditional way. I cannot wait to share it!

What new trends are you seeing for 2023 and 2024?

Big traditional ball gowns done in an alternative way, lots of tulle, lots of colour. People aren’t scared to break tradition anymore and follow their own aesthetic. Dramatic sleeves are still popular. In contrast, short dresses are still popular too and are also a great option for a second evening look to party in!

Which is your favourite alternative colour scheme and why?

I love a dramatic black dress with a very colourful bouquet/crown and florals. You expect a black dress to be very gothic, which I also love, but having the colourful florals contrasting against the black is stunning and softens the whole look.

Horseshoe Flowers

And what alternative wedding would be complete without some stunning dried flowers, offering you a truly unique and different take on the classic wedding florals? Obviously were pretty biased here, but one thing all our couples say to us is that they are excited for something a bit different.

Dried flowers allow us to experiment with so much texture, tone and volume, that we can really add that something special to your big day.

Whether you choose preserved flowers and foliage, or go all out on intense colour with an array of dried flowers and pampas grasses, we bring some extra sass to the day (that you can keep!).

What's the best thing about working with alternative couples?

The best thing is the freedom to go for it, to push the boundaries! Alternative couples tend to embrace your ideas and often try something new and exciting.

What is one thing you recommend to anyone wanting to go for a more alternative approach to their wedding design?

Go for it! Imagine looking back on your wedding day and seeing all your creativity and your personality shine through? Getting married is one of the most intimate days where you and your partner can share in your love, your life and your ideas together in front of all the people you love, so make sure your day is about you and represents who you are.

What has been your favourite past order/ wedding and why?

Honestly, every wedding is so different and i just love each and every one. But the ones that shine out to me the most are the ones where the couple made the day about them, and used their day to showcase their love and who they both are by choosing a theme that was special to them, that meant something.

What new trends are you seeing for 2023 and 2024?

I'm seeing lots and lots of colour. Brave colour combination that really pop off the page and I'm seeing more and more people choose something different and unique, and that is so exciting!

Which is your favourite alternative colour scheme and why?

Without a doubt, red and pink together! I LOVE this colour combination, and I'm seeing a few people choose to take that to the next level and add a third colour into the mix. Just a pop or two of some burgundy for example, takes that look to a whole new level!

One thing that has come up with each of our featured suppliers, and an awesome theme for us to finish this post on, is that no matter what you decide to do, our advice to all is that you remain true to YOU! That means, the more you look to yourselves for inspiration, the more your ideas will resonate with yourselves, your guests and your suppliers, that with then help you bring that magic to life.

Be brave and excite yourselves. You wont regret it!
